Where does Mother's Day come from?
The origins of Mother's Day go back to ancient times, when the Greeks and Romans celebrated female goddesses, in particular Cybele, the Greek Mother Goddess. This celebration evolved during the Middle Ages into Christian Mother's Day.
In modern times, it was in 1908 United States. In 1908, an American woman, Anna Jarvis, organized the first Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia, to honor her own mother, who had dedicated her life to others. She wanted to create a special day to celebrate all mothers and recognize their essential role in society.
Anna Jarvis worked hard to have the day recognized as a national holiday. She wrote to politicians, officials and campaigned for the official establishment of Mother's Day. In 1914, her work bore fruit when President Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order proclaiming that the second Sunday in May would henceforth be celebrated as Mother's Day in the United States.
