Built in 1923-1924 according to plans by Montreal architect Joseph-Raoul Gariepy, architecture specialist in hospitals and theaters, the Rialto is inspired by one of the finest neo-baroque buildings of the 19th century, the Paris Opera (1861-1875). Historical monument in Quebec and Ottawa, the Rialto Theatre was originally a local cinema in a very sought after item. It’s a rare beauty. Elegant detailing and graceful proportions are breathtaking. The Rialto Theatre is a centre for the performing arts: open and inclusive, multilingual and multicultural, grounded in the present yet not afraid to wink at the past. In addition, the Rialto Theater gives a platform to the emerging artists of the Montreal area, with a specific focus on Mile End, as well as the entire province of Quebec.
